How it works

How it works

The order of things from purchase to getting online, and what to check before you leave.

Check that your device supports eSIM

eSIM support depends on the device model, carrier lock and the region it was sold in. Please check before you buy.

iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open Settings > General > About.
  2. If the list includes “EID”, your device supports eSIM.

Android

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
  2. If you see “Add eSIM” or “Add SIM”, your device supports eSIM.
Menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and OS version. A carrier-locked device cannot use the eSIM even after installing it.

Turn on data roaming (roaming plans)

Roaming plans connect through partner networks, so you need data roaming switched on for the eSIM you installed. Local-network plans do not need it.

iPhone (iOS)

  1. In Settings > Cellular (Mobile Data), select the eSIM you installed.
  2. Turn on “Turn On This Line”.
  3. Open “Cellular Data Options” and turn on “Data Roaming”.

Android

  1. In Settings > Network & internet > SIMs, select the eSIM you installed.
  2. Enable that eSIM.
  3. Turn on “Roaming”. On some devices it may be under “Mobile network > Roaming”.
Before you travel, turn off data roaming on your home carrier line to avoid charges.
